The First Day of School
The first day of school.
Tiny uniform. Massive shoes. A backpack that’s basically wearing them.
And you, standing there like:
“I’m sorry… weren’t you just a baby five minutes ago??”
Honestly, rude.
It’s one of those days that’s a full emotional cocktail.
A bit of excitement.
A bit of panic.
A surprising urge to cry over Velcro shoes.
And that’s just you.
For your child, it’s a whole new world.
New people. New rules. New routines.
A room full of other small humans who are all pretending they know what’s going on.
(Some do. Most absolutely do not.)
You’ve got:
- the ones who run in like they own the place
- the ones who cling like a koala on espresso
- and the ones who confidently walk in… then immediately reconsider all life choices
All of it = completely normal.
Meanwhile, you’re outside doing your best “cool, calm, collected parent” impression.
Smiling. Nodding. Saying things like:
“You’re going to have the BEST day!”
While internally:
“Please don’t cry. Please don’t cry. Please don’t make ME cry.”
Spoiler: someone might cry.
The truth is, the first day isn’t about getting everything right.
They’re not expected to:
- nail every routine
- remember where anything goes
- or suddenly become a tiny organised adult
(Imagine.)
It’s just about showing up.
That’s it.
And yes… there might be drama.
There might be tears at the door.
There might be a dramatic goodbye like you’re being deployed overseas.
There might also be… absolutely nothing.
Some kids just wave and disappear like:
“Bye. Don’t embarrass me.”
Again. Rude.
Then comes pick-up time.
You’ve spent hours wondering:
- Are they okay?
- Did they eat anything?
- Have they made a best friend already?
And what do you get?
“How was your day?”
“Good.”
Groundbreaking.
If you’re lucky, you might get a bit more:
“I played.”
With who?
Doing what?
Where?
Mystery. Absolute mystery.
They might come out:
- buzzing with energy
- completely exhausted
- slightly emotional
- or all three at once
Because let’s be honest... it’s a LOT for a tiny human.
And you?
You’ll feel weirdly proud over things like:
“They went in.”
“They stayed.”
“They came back.”
Iconic behaviour. 10/10.
The first day of school isn’t perfect.
It’s not smooth.
It’s not calm.
It’s not a Pinterest moment (despite the photo you forced beforehand).
But it is the start of something big.
Because from here, things start to shift.
Routines become familiar.
Faces become friends.
Confidence starts to creep in.
And suddenly, the place that felt huge and scary… just becomes school.
So if the day feels emotional, chaotic, or slightly unhinged…
Congratulations.
You’ve absolutely nailed the authentic first day of school experience.
And if you cried in the car after drop-off?
No evidence. No judgement.
